Dune Perspective
Great Sand Dunes, Colorado
2003
BW66000807
This photo, taken the day before the winter solstice of 2003, was shot in Great Sand Dunes National Park, of the San Luis Valley. This park is the
home of North America's highest dunes, piled up against the flank of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range on the edge of this great valley of
south-central Colorado. The Sand Dunes are a perfect subject for shooting on the winter solstice - the sun sits low in the sky all day, providing
wonderful shadows that highlight the graceful dune form. Recent snowfall increases the contrast and texture of the photo, enhancing the
composition. This shot was intentionally composed to emphasize the concept of perspective, the technique of representing the illusion of three
dimensions on a two-dimensional surface. The dominate line curves though the photo from the foreground to the background, towards the top of
the highest dune in the National Park. Also, note the tracks in the middle right portion of the photo, below the dominant line - they are the tracks of
a snowboarder who had recently rode the snow and sand!
