Goosenecks and Monument Valley
Goosenecks of the San Juan River and
Monument Valley, Utah and Arizona

An acquaintance told me of a wonderful overlook for the Goosenecks of the San Juan River, the canyon that the river travels through just before
it enters Lake Powell and joins the Colorado River.  After driving through a winter storm shooting throughout my way across Colorado and, of
course, stopping at a favorite brew pub in Cortez, I reached this magical place late that evening.  The view under the moon was intriguing - I
couldn't wait until sunrise to shoot in the ever-changing morning light from this wonderful perch!  The steadily-increasing light of the predawn
woke me from my slumber in a bag that I threw on the slickrock late that evening, perfect timing for getting my equipment together and climbing
to some great perches on the cliff face to shoot the spectacular landscape under the dawn light.  After some stubborn clouds parted, I captured
this photograph of the Canyon and Monument Valley (of Northern Arizona) beyond.

This shot was taken about 2 hours after sunrise, when the sun was still low enough to provide decent filtration but partially lighting the canyon
to provide greater contrast and texture.  A few clouds from the winter storm hung around over Monument Valley to finish the composition.
