Heart of the Gunnison
Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colorado

Sigh...another drought winter in Colorado. The condition of the ski slopes weren't worth risking a twisted knee so I decided to spend the weekend
with another passion - photography! Black Canyon of the Gunnison was my destination on this January day. It was a cold morning, with
temperatures in the Gunnison Valley well below zero (Fahrenheit). But to my surprise, as I reached Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, I
found that not only was it very cold, there was a great deal of snow on the ground. I didn't expect that...and had forgotten my snowshoes again! But
I managed to get around despite that handicap and shoot a few rolls of film. This shot, my favorite from that day, was taken not long after noon,
when the sky was still high enough to light up portions of the canyon. The fresh snowfall added a powdering of white to the 1800 foot deep
canyon, to add contrast to the black-colored rock.
A couple of weeks later as I was hanging out with a friend one evening, I showed her some of my recent work. Looking at this shot, she exclaimed
"look, a heart at the bottom of the canyon!" I hadn't even noticed it, though it's so obvious. That evening this shot was given the name Heart of the
Gunnison.
