Hoist
Leadville, Colorado

Leadville, like many towns in Colorado, has a long history with mining.  Many individuals in these towns are proud of their mining heritage and proudly display
artifacts from this era.  This hoist is just such an artifact.  The graceful circular forms of the flywheel and oddly-toothed gears presented an interesting,
multi-layered industrial composition that beckoned to me one warm December day.

Many of my photographs intentionally avoid evidence of human disturbance.  This photo, in contrast, is presented as an elegant reminder of the industrial history
of the American West.
