Shadows of Confliction
Great Sand Dunes, Colorado
2003
BW66000902
This photo, shot as I was waiting for sunset the day before the winter solstice of 2003, was composed from the highest dune in Great Sand
Dunes National Park, of the San Luis Valley. This park is the home of North America's highest dunes, piled up against the flank of the Sangre
de Cristo mountain range on the edge of this great valley of south-central Colorado. The Sand Dunes are a perfect subject for shooting on the
winter solstice - the sun sits low in the sky all day, providing wonderful shadows that highlight the graceful dune form. Recent snowfall
increases the contrast and texture of the photo, enhancing the composition. That morning another minor storm passed through, which
provided the clouds to finish the composition.
The title Shadows of Confliction relates to the strong shadow of the foreground, as well as the lesser dunes and shadows in the middle
ground. This form reminds me of confliction but balance, opposing but complimentary, literally light and dark - similar to the Yin-Yang
symbol. To me, this photo represents my inner conflicts, conflicts that balance me to be all of who I am.
