North Coast of California

The North Coast of California is filled with scenes of incredible beauty.  Traveling along this coast in June of 2004, I was focused on shooting the
jagged coastline in black & white, attempting to capture some of this beauty on film.  Thick clouds rolled in off of the coast limiting my options one
evening so I found a camp in the coastal range, hoping for better light the next day.

As I drove up the coast north of Fort Bragg the next morning the clouds began to break, allowing the rising sun to intermittently illuminate the
landscape.  Walking along a section of rocky beach still shooting black & white landscape compositions, I eventually opened my eyes to the
incredible sea life exposed along the base of the rocks by an unusually low tide.  I switched to color film and my macro lens and began to shoot
compositions of the starfish, sea anemone, and mussels densely covered these rarely exposed rocks.  The sun, still low in the sky, was mostly
clear of any clouds now, providing consistently excellent light that brought out the full intensity of colors.  The rising tide broke on the rocks,
washing around and periodically wetting both my subjects and myself, forcing me to hold my expensive gear over my head while I hoped a rogue
wave wouldn't be next.  I shot this composition during one of the lulls in the breaking waves.
