About Steven E. Yochum
Steve, who moved from The East to Colorado in 2000, has a
number of passions: he is an avid outdoorsman who loves to
explore the mountains, canyons, and coastlines of The West
through backpacking, biking, climbing, skiing, and paddling; he is
a hydrologist who applies fundamental hydrologic theory to
water-quality nutrient studies, dam-breach analyses, salinity
studies, and stream restoration; and, of course, he is a passionate
photographer who has been seriously pursuing this interest since
1997, though he has dabbled in photography all of his life.

Photography is a balancing passion for Steve.
Working as both an environmental scientist and
an artist has balanced Steve’s inspirations,
providing a means to explore multiple passions
and facets of his perceptions. Plus, As both an
artist and a scientist, he sees patterns and
processes that many folks don't notice. Steve is
currently working on his PhD at the Colorado
State University, as he continues to provide
hydrologic expertise to the Natural Resources
Conservation Service. For more information on
his work as a hydrologist, please see www.

My photography of the American West is focused on capturing the ideal world of beauty and balance while
acknowledging the underlying currents of power and fierceness. The beauty and balance is an ideal that we have
emphasized in our society, a perception of benevolence that often leads us to reverence. The power and
fierceness is a place of greater reality, the recognition of which illuminates the wondrous intensity of the natural
world. No matter what the ideal, to so many of us these places represent freedom, a destination to escape to
from more established worlds. These photos from my travels throughout The West represent my own quest for
escape and the results of my passion for bringing and expressing a piece of this freedom back home.
